Maryland State Board of Election certifies results of historic gubernatorial election

‘I’ll work tirelessly every day to make Maryland a stronger, more inclusive home for everyone,’ says Governor-Elect Wes Moore

Governor-Elect Moore secured more individual votes than any candidate for Governor in Maryland history

BALTIMORE (Dec. 9, 2022) – Earlier this week, the Maryland Board of Elections certified the 2022 Gubernatorial Election results showing that Governor-Elect Wes Moore won his race by historic margins.

The Governor-Elect won the election with more individual votes than any gubernatorial candidate in Maryland’s history, and by a bigger margin than any candidate in the last 40 years.

“I will work tirelessly every day to make Maryland a stronger, more inclusive home for everyone,” said Governor-Elect Wes Moore. “While we won this race by a historic margin, I recognize that some Marylanders did not vote for me. I am their Governor too. I will work, every day, to earn the support of every resident in our state and together, we will create a Maryland where no one is left behind.”

Per the Fox/AP exit poll, Moore won veteran households by 53%-44%. Moore also won the vote among voters who identified the economy/jobs as the most important issue facing our country (51%-44%) and among voters who identified crime (49%-47%).

Moore’s landslide victory resonated in every corner of Maryland. Moore won more votes than any Democrat had received in over 40 years in 16 out of Maryland’s 24 jurisdictions.

The historic margins resonated down-ballot, as well. Democrats won two additional seats in the State Senate seats — winning Legislative District 33 (western Anne Arundel County) for the first time ever and winning Legislative District 34 (southern Harford County) that had not been won by a Democrat since 1990, giving the Democrats a 34 to 13 majority in the Senate.

Democrats won five additional seats in the House of Delegates; including one seat in District 2B

(Washington County), one seat in District 8 (Baltimore County), two seats in District 9A (western Howard County/Montgomery County), and one seat in District 33B (Anne Arundel County); giving Democrats a 102 to 39 majority in the House of Delegates.

Democrat Jessica Fitzwater was elected to the open county executive race in Frederick County. Incumbent Democratic county executives earned second terms in Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Howard, Montgomery, and Prince George’s counties.

“Governor-Elect Moore ran a disciplined campaign focused squarely on the issues facing Marylanders across the state,” said Campaign Manager Ned Miller. “And that resulted in Moore winning by the largest margin of any Democratic governor in the country. That’s because Governor-Elect Moore was able to build a diverse coalition that not only energized the base, but enlarged it — uniting Democrats, Independents, and even Republicans around a patriotic vision to leave no one behind.”
