Moore-Miller Inauguration festivities continue on MLK Day with a Day of Service, engaging volunteers in community service across Maryland

‘One thing is clear to me – Maryland will lead, and will lead with service in our hearts.’ – Governor-Elect Wes Moore

ANNAPOLIS (Jan. 16, 2023) – Today, The Moore-Miller Inauguration held a Day of Service in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and in partnership with United Way of Central Maryland. Governor-Elect Wes Moore, incoming First Lady Dawn Moore, Lieutenant Governor-Elect Aruna Miller, and incoming Second Gentleman David Miller were joined by over 1,000 volunteers who took part in 25 service projects across Maryland.

Governor-Elect Wes Moore said, “Dr. King had a quote that sits on my desk: ‘Philanthropy is commendable, but it must not cause the philanthropist to overlook the circumstances of economic injustice which make philanthropy necessary.’ We have to fix systems. We have to fix the reasons that we continue to have so many people fall between the cracks …We have remarkable community servants who every single day are fighting to protect our neighbors, but if we are not fixing systems, we will find ourselves cleaning up the debris that comes from broken systems. If we stand divided as a state, we cannot win. But if we stand united as a state, we cannot lose. Maryland will be the state that serves. We are asking, we are calling, and we are begging every Marylander to go out there and serve… to ensure that our neighbors are cared for.”

“Today, we are touching communities across the state on this Day of Service to honor the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. But let’s not forget his dream of a beloved community – a community in which everyone is cared for, absent of poverty, hunger, and hate,” said Lieutenant Governor-Elect Aruna Miller.

This day was made possible thanks to the contributions and collaboration across a number of organizations including United Way of Central Maryland, Local United Ways across the state, CareFirst, and many others.
